Humla lies beneath the Himalayas in one of the  most remote and unspoiled frontiers of Nepal.
Being the poorest area of Nepal, Humla lacks modern facilities for transportation, health, sanitation, and education. Most children are forced work in the fields and few attend school.
There are no roadways. Access to the region is gained only by a small dirt airstrip in the district headquarters, Simikot. In winter, the airport is often blocked due to heavy snowfall completely isolating the 85,000 people who live there. People of this area face many medical difficulties when they become ill and many die owing to lack of medical care. Even if travel from the region is possible, many families are unable to afford the treatment offered in the distant cities of Nepalgunj or Kathmandu.
